Ir Dr. S.L. Chan is the Chair Professor Emeritus in Computational Structural Engineering at Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Now, he is the Technical Advisor of Nida Technology Co., Ltd. His research areas covers nonlinear structural analysis with applications to design, steel, composite and glass structures, buckling and stability, flexible barrier system, etc.

Scholarly Activities & Impacts

First principal consultant and drafter for the drafting of Code of Practice for structural uses of steel in buildings 2005 and its 2011 update version, and the consultant for the 2018 glass design code and seismic code of the Buildings Department of the HKSAR Government;
Honorary Fellow of the Singapore Structural Steel Society in 2009;
Chairman of the Structural Division of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers in 2013-14, and Chairman of the Structural Discipline in 2016-2019;
Editorial board member of the new Chinese Code for Design of Steel Structures GB50017-2017;
First-class Award in Nonlinear Analysis from the Ministry of Education of China in 2009;
Editor-in-chief of 2 SCI international journals, and editorial board member of 8 journals;
Structural Excellence Award jointly awarded by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers and the Institution of Structural Engineers (UK) in 2013 (Singapore Cool Dry & Moist Conservatories project);
Geotechnical and Structural Division Research Award from the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers in 2016;
Co-designed the MGM steel roof structure in Macau with China State Construction International, setting a Guinness World Record for the longest clear span roof in 2019.

Participated in the drafting of the direct analysis method related content in the Chinese Code for Design of Steel Structures GB50017-2017;
Main developer of NIDA Professional & Highrise, NAF-Shell, and RCD; developed the desktop and cloud program NIDA-Wind for wind load assessment of building structures;
Participated in numerous steel structure designs in Hong Kong, Macau, Singapore, India, Myanmar, and other places, as well as seismic assessment of existing buildings in Hong Kong;
Representative projects: Singapore Cool Dry & Moist Conservatories (2013 Structural Excellence Award of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers); Macau MGM Spectacle Roof (2019 Guinness World Record for the longest clear span roof).
